Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice-Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has emphasized the critical need for dialogue to ensure Pakistan’s stability, highlighting that the need for negotiations transcends political interests and focuses on the country’s future. Speaking informally with the media during his appearance at an anti-terrorism court in Lahore on Friday, Qureshi underlined the importance of constructive talks to address Pakistan’s pressing challenges.
A Critical Juncture
“The country is at a critical juncture, and the talks must lead to a positive outcome, or the current government risks instability,” Qureshi stated. He stressed that the failure of these negotiations could jeopardize the future of democracy in Pakistan, reiterating that such efforts are for the nation’s benefit and not merely for PTI.
PTI's Sincere Approach
Highlighting PTI’s commitment to the negotiation process, Qureshi remarked, “Negotiations are essential for Pakistan’s future, not for PTI.” He pointed out that the party has initiated dialogue with sincerity, aiming to prioritize national interests over political gains. He also urged the government to reciprocate with a similar focus on the country’s welfare.
Addressing Political Prisoners
Qureshi expressed concerns over the treatment of political detainees, emphasizing that their rights must be upheld. “Even individuals convicted of serious crimes can receive bail, yet we, who are politically innocent, have been denied both bail and a fair trial for over a year,” he lamented. He called for the release of political prisoners, asserting that their demands are fair and justified.
Additionally, he urged the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26, 2022, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in addressing these incidents.
National Priorities
Drawing from his experience as a former foreign minister, Qureshi also reflected on Pakistan’s broader challenges. He stressed that key leaders, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, must prioritize national interests over political ambitions. In particular, he reaffirmed the importance of Pakistan’s nuclear program as essential for the country’s defense and survival.
Optimism for Progress
Qureshi concluded on a hopeful note, praising recent developments such as the release of prisoners as a step in the right direction. “Releasing these prisoners is a welcome development,” he remarked, acknowledging the positive momentum towards easing political tensions.
He urged the political leadership to demonstrate wisdom and unity during these turbulent times, emphasizing that Pakistan’s strength lies in its resilience and the collective will of its people. With sincerity and commitment to dialogue, he expressed confidence in the country’s ability to overcome its challenges and secure a stable future.
