The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiation committee is scheduled to meet the party’s jailed founder, Imran Khan, at Adiala Jail today (Thursday) to update him on the initial round of talks with the government, according to sources. The meeting is set for 2 PM.
Briefing on Talks and Strategy
The PTI team will brief Khan about the discussions held with the government on Monday and seek his input on the party’s future course of action. Sources indicate that this meeting follows permission granted to the PTI negotiators for consulting their party leader.
Progress in Negotiations
The talks, initiated earlier this week in Islamabad after months of political tension, aim to address critical issues between the PTI and the government. Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government’s negotiation panel, confirmed that the PTI team’s request to consult Khan had been accepted.
The government delegation at the first session included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Naveed Qamar, and MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar. Representing the PTI were former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, SIC Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and MWM leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.
Key Demands and Future Talks
The next round of negotiations is scheduled for January 2, during which the PTI is expected to present its demands in writing. These include the release of political prisoners, including Khan, and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 riots and the November 26 incident.
The PTI has previously warned of a civil disobedience movement if these demands are not met. Meanwhile, Rana Sanaullah emphasized the importance of finding common ground in state interests despite differing views.
"Their demands and ours may not align entirely, but dialogue can help reach mutually beneficial solutions," Sanaullah stated, underlining the need for structured discussions.
