In a previous Forbes study, Karachi was also ranked as the second riskiest city in the world.
According to the worldwide Cities' Cost of Living Index 2024, Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad are among the world's cheapest cities, according to a recent rating by the worldwide database business Numbeo.
Pakistan’s three largest cities rank last on the index created by Numbeo, the world’s largest database of user-contributed data on cities and countries globally. This is in sharp contrast to the most expensive cities in the world, New York, Geneva, and Zurich being at the top of the list.
Karachi
The index has determined that the bustling port city of Karachi is the world's cheapest metropolis. Karachi's combined cost of living and rent index is 11.3, with a cost of living index of 19.0 and a rent index of 2.9. Furthermore, the Local Purchasing Power Index is 28.0, the Restaurant Price Index is 13.1, and the Grocery Index is 17.6.
Lahore
The second-biggest city in Pakistan, Lahore, is next to last on Numbeo's ranking and follows closely. The city's Rent Index is 2.9 and its Cost of Living Index is 19.0, matching Karachi's. When added together, these two factors yield a total Cost of Living and Rent Index of 11.3. In Lahore, the Local Purchasing Power Index is 27.3, the Restaurant Price Index is 15.7, and the Grocery Index is somewhat lower at 16.3.
Islamabad
The federal capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, comes in fourth last on the list. With a rent index of 5.3 and a cost of living index of 21.5, the city has a higher total cost of living and rent index than the other two cities (13.7). Islamabad's local purchasing power index is 36.2, the restaurant price index is 14.6 and the groceries index is 19.5.
In the past, a Forbes survey ranked Karachi as the second riskiest city in the world, while Lahore's reputation has been damaged in global city rankings by pollution and smog.
